In the early 1980s, as the Chinese population in Mississauga grew, there was a pressing need for a community organization to promote Chinese culture and provide community services. Against this historical backdrop, the Mississauga Chinese Association was officially established on January 23, 1982, and was registered as a charitable non-profit organization with the Canada Revenue Agency on May 3, 1987.
From its inception, the Mississauga Chinese Association dedicated itself to promoting Chinese traditional culture, organizing activities widely participated in by the Chinese community, such as New Year celebrations, Mid-Autumn Festival, Hong Kong Festival, Rainbow Festival, and Dragon Boat races. To help Chinese immigrants adapt to their new environment, the association started English tutoring classes for newcomers and Chinese tutoring classes for the second-generation immigrants, which were well received.
In 1993, the association formally inaugurated its premises at 80 Golden Square, with the mayor of Mississauga, Hazel McCallion, attending the celebration, along with over 500 guests. Having its own office and activity space allowed the association to enhance its community services significantly. It also began participating in Carassauga, Mississauga’s largest multicultural festival, hosting the Chinese Pavilion continuously to this day.
In 1994, the association successfully obtained federal government funding for the LINC program, designed to improve language skills for new immigrants. The first LINC class commenced on September 19, 1994, with over 30 students enrolled.
By 2009, the original venue could no longer meet the growing service demands, prompting a move in June of that year to a larger 5,600 square foot office at 16 Golden Square, where it operates to this day.
From its early days to 2024, through the efforts of successive boards of directors, the Mississauga Chinese Association has become a home for the Chinese community in Mississauga and the surrounding areas. Its services have expanded beyond the Chinese community to include other ethnic groups of new immigrants. The current board of directors continues to build on this legacy, aiming to further enhance the Mississauga Chinese Association and provide high-quality services to immigrants of all ethnicities in the Greater Toronto Area.
